9 Feb 2018 2nd - Service at Ho Fu Neighbourhood Centre for Senior Citizens (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen)

Service at Ho Fu Neighbourhood Centre for Senior Citizens

On 9th February 2018, we have been to Ho Fu Neighbourhood Centre for Senior Citizens to have services. As we arrived, we noticed that Tsz Wan Shan was an elderly district. Most of the resident mainly focus on elderly people.Tsz Wan Shan was a living area, which housing estate more than commercial shop or mall. Also, we saw that there were several nursing homes around the Ho Fu Neighbourhood Centre.

When we arrived, we got a simple introduction about the center and a briefing by Vivian, the social worker centre. On that day, the center holds a birthday for people who are responsible for taking care of some elderly., they are 護老者. Vivian gave us a rundown for the birthday party, and we are responsible for helping them to hold it.

The Rundown

After the briefing session, I am responsible for helping the center to take photos of the event.Matthew was responsible for counting marks of each group when they play games.Jonas was going to get into the group and talk with the 護老者.After we set up all the things, the event was almost beginning.I thought 護老者 were some teenagers or people was under 50 years old, but most of them were already 60 years old.I am quite shocked. As we have to wait for most of the 護老者 to arrive, our schoolmates were chatting with them.Jonas also chatted with his group of 護老者 and understood their life more.

First, we introduced ourselves where are we come from and said some blessing words to them. Then, the MC started to play games with them. They have played guessing game and answered the question. They are very enthusiastic to involve in the game.Unfortunately, we had a lesson at 3pm, so we three of us had to leave earlier. We couldn't join the eating session with them.

After joining the event, I felt it was a meaningful and unforgettable experience.I was quite shocked that most of the 護老者 were over 60 years old. They still have to take care elderly which is older than them. This is a bad phenomenon. I understand that Hong Kong has the aging population, but young people should take more care of the elderly instead of letting elderly people take care of themselves.More students should take action to join more volute of this kind of center which to show solicitude for the elderly. I hope more of teenagers and young adult can do more to make Hong Kong better.

  1. After reading your service experience, I really appreciate the role and work of 護老者. I agree your point that young people have the responsibility to take care of the elderly, however, most of the young are busy with working and earning their living in this modern society.
I guess the reason of being 護老者 is that some seniors are retired but still have well physical strength and working motivation, and thus, they are willing to contribute their time and passion to take care the elderly who are older than them.; In addition, as in the same age group, the senior 護老者 can closely communicate with the elderly they cares, and further understand and satisfy those elderlies’ needs.
